Theft Prevention Tips for Your Motorbikes

January 11th, 2010 locklover No comments

Don’t let your bike become an easy target for thieves.

By following these simple guidelines it could mean the difference between a thief choosing your bike or a more vulnerable one.

  • When at home, store the bike in a secure location such as a garage, storage shed, or locked/fenced area.
  • Even if you’re only leaving your bike for a short period of time, make sure it’s secured.
  • When you’re away from home, secure your motorbike while it’s parked by locking several bikes together or to a secure object that can’t be dismantled.
  • Use multiple locks such as fork, disc and ignition
    • Use disc locks with a large bright colored tag to remind you of the lock and to make the lock more visible to thieves.
    • Lock the front forks on the motorcycle.
    • Lock your ignition.
  • After you have parked your bike, continue to check on it by looking back as often as possible when leaving the area.
  • Keep your motorcycle registration and insurance card on your person so that if your bike is stolen, you are able to more quickly verify motorcycle ownership and have the VIN number handy for Gardai
  • Motorbike  thefts can also occur when you’re selling your bike. Thieves could use false identities and produce fake financial documents to gain access to your bike.

Tips and Security Advice

September 30th, 2009 locklover No comments

Most criminals are opportunists, don’t give them the opportunity to steal your possessions. By implementing the measures set out below you can enhance the level of security of your home and business

Front Door: The first line of defense is the front door. This should preferably be solid and fitted with a rim lock and a 5 lever Mortice deadlock and a Mortice bolt. To raise the level of security, fit a door chain and a door viewer.

Exterior Doors: All exterior doors should be fitted either with 5 lever Mortice deadlocks or if they are Multi point locks with a cylinder .The cylinder should be flush with the door and you should use an anti snap or a break secure cylinder.

Windows: Windows are the most common means of entry for burglars, fortunately window locks are available to fit all types of windows and your local locksmith will advise you on the type best suited to your windows.

Lighting: Good lighting can be protection against burglary and criminal damage. We recommend lighting that comes on at dusk and stays on until dawn. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL’s) fitted with a photoelectric cell provides lighting during the hours of darkness and at a very low cost.

Garage and shed: Secure and lock your garage or shed. Burglars often look for ladders or tools to force entry to your home.

Neighbourhood: Good neighbours are a very effective means of preventing crime in your neighborhood. Forming a neighborhood watch scheme in your area is a most effective means of making people vigilant and making life harder for the criminal.

Callers: Callers to your home should not be admitted unless they are known to you, and are satisfied as to their identity, ask to see some identification. Use a door viewer and door chain. “If in doubt keep him out”.

Alarms: Install an alarm with a registered installer, a full list can be found on www.psa.gov.ie It is an offence for the installer and the house holder to install an alarm without being registered with the PSA which is the Private security authority They were set up by the Irish Government to regulate the security industry. A monitoring service will give added peace of mind or at least get a
text service that upon activation of your alarm a designated list of people will get a text message to notify them. It is recommended that you get your alarm serviced on a yearly basis.

Tips for business owners

Cameras: CCTV should be considered. Standards of cameras and recorders have improved greatly in recent years. All recorders now have a minimum of 20 day recording straight on to a hard drive and also the possibility to view the cameras live over the internet at no extra cost.

Safes: If you have a safe you should control the number of keys and check that the safe has adequate cover for the amount of valuables you have in it. This should be confirmed with your insurance company.

• If acquiring or extending premises, consider security at the planning stage. It will be cheaper and more effective than adding measures later.
• Carry out a risk assessment to decide on the threats you might be facing and take the appropriate actions
• When recruiting staff or hiring contractors, check identities and follow up references
• Consider how best to protect your information and take proper IT security precautions. Examineyour methods for disposing of confidential waste.

Cash Control
Have a cash control /Storage plan in place for busy periods. Do not keep large amounts of cash on your premises.

Vary your routine regularly when withdrawing or lodging cash.

Discuss security with your staff and families and make sure people are aware of their personal security at home and in the workplace.

If you are suspicious of someone or something you should report the matter ASAP to your local Garda station.
