Ford Replacement Keys,
Spare Keys & Programming

Ford car keys have changed quite a bit over the years, so replacing a lost key for an older Fiesta or Focus can be a very different job from working on a newer Kuga, Puma or keyless Ford. We first check the model, year and key system so we know what type of replacement key and programming the vehicle is likely to need.

For many Ford models, making another key involves both cutting the correct blade and programming the electronic transponder so the immobiliser recognises it. Our mobile auto locksmiths can carry out Ford car key replacement, cutting and programming at the vehicle for many models around Dublin, rather than automatically having the car brought to a dealer.

If you still have one working Ford key, getting a spare Ford key made is usually much easier than waiting until every key is lost. We regularly deal with Ford Fiesta, Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, Puma and C-Max keys, as well as commercial vehicles such as the Transit, Transit Custom and Ranger.

The problem is not always a completely lost key either. Ford remote buttons can wear out, cases and blades can become damaged, batteries can fail and an electronic key may stop being recognised correctly by the vehicle. Newer Ford models can also use smart or proximity keys, so the exact replacement depends heavily on the vehicle generation and specification.

Ford Key Problems We Deal With Every Day

◉

Ford key not being recognised; the vehicle may not be reading the transponder correctly, or the electronic part of the key may need checking or programming before the engine will start.

⛔

Ford says key not detected; on newer Ford models with keyless start, a weak fob battery, damaged smart key or communication fault can leave the car unable to detect the key even when it is inside the vehicle.

🔑

Broken Ford remote or flip key; worn buttons, cracked cases, loose blades and damaged electronics are common reasons a Fiesta, Focus or other Ford key stops working properly even when part of the key still functions.

+

All Ford keys lost; if there is no working key left, we first identify the correct Ford key system and then cut and program a replacement where the vehicle and system allow it.

◌

Ford Transit or Transit Custom key problems; commercial Fords often need quick turnaround because the van is part of somebody’s working day. We deal with lost, damaged and spare key jobs on Transit models as well as other Ford vans.

⎘

Spare Ford key needed; if one working key is still available, getting another Ford key cut and programmed before the original is lost can avoid a much more awkward all-keys-lost situation.

Ford Models We Commonly Deal With

Ford key systems can vary quite a bit depending on the model, year and whether the vehicle uses a conventional ignition, remote key or newer keyless-start system. These are some of the Ford models we regularly get key enquiries for around Dublin.

Fiesta Focus Mondeo Kuga Puma C-Max S-Max Galaxy EcoSport Ranger Transit Transit Custom Transit Connect Tourneo

The exact Ford key and programming method depends on the vehicle generation and security system. Send the registration, model and year when requesting a quote so we can check the correct key type first.

How a Ford Car or Van Key Job Works

Ford key systems vary between older Fiesta and Focus models, newer keyless cars, and commercial vehicles such as the Transit and Transit Custom. We normally start with the vehicle details so we can work out what key and programming setup is likely to be needed before the locksmith attends.

01

Tell Us Which Ford You Have

Send us the model, year, registration and what has happened. That could be a lost Fiesta key, a spare Focus key, a damaged Kuga remote, or a Transit van with no working key left.

02

We Check the Key & Security System

We identify the likely blade, transponder, remote or smart-key setup and what programming is required. The same Ford model name can use different systems depending on generation and specification.

03

Mobile Locksmith Attends

For many Ford cars and vans we can come to the vehicle, cut the replacement key where required, program it to the immobiliser and test the key or remote before the job is finished.

Ford Transit & commercial vehicle work matters too; Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect key jobs are an important part of our mobile auto locksmith work. When a van is off the road because the only key is lost, damaged or locked inside, getting somebody to the vehicle can be much more useful than arranging recovery and losing more of the working day.

Ford Car & Van Key FAQs

These are some of the Ford key questions we get from drivers, tradespeople and van owners around Dublin — particularly on Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Ranger, Transit and Transit Custom models.

How much does a Ford replacement key cost in Dublin?

Ford key prices vary depending on the model, year and whether the vehicle uses a conventional transponder key, remote key or newer keyless system. A spare key for an older Fiesta can be a different job from replacing a keyless Kuga or making a Transit Custom key when all keys have been lost. We normally ask for the registration, model and year first so we can check the likely key system and agree the price before the work starts.

I have lost the only key to my Ford. Can you make another one at the vehicle?

For many Ford cars and vans, yes. An all-keys-lost job is more involved because there is no working key available for comparison or programming. We first identify the correct key and security system, then cut and program a replacement where the vehicle allows it. One of the advantages of a mobile auto locksmith is that this can often be dealt with where the Ford is parked rather than automatically arranging recovery to a dealer.

My Ford says “Key Not Detected”. Does that mean I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On Ford models with push-button or keyless start, a “Key Not Detected” warning can be caused by a weak fob battery, damaged smart key, communication issue or a fault elsewhere in the vehicle. If a spare key works normally, that immediately tells us something useful. If neither key is detected, it is better to check the fault before assuming that buying another fob will solve it.

Can you make Ford Transit and Transit Custom keys?

Yes. Ford vans are an important part of the automotive locksmith work we do. We deal with Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect key jobs including lost keys, spare keys, damaged remotes and vehicle lockouts. For somebody using the van for work, the main issue is often getting back on the road without losing the rest of the day, so mobile attendance can be particularly useful.

Can you make a spare Ford key before I lose the original?

Yes, and that is usually the better time to do it. If one working key is still available, making a second Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Ranger or Transit key is normally more straightforward than dealing with the vehicle once every key has been lost. This is especially worth considering for work vans where being left with no usable key can mean both a locksmith problem and lost working time.

My Ford remote buttons have stopped working, but the vehicle still starts. Is the whole key faulty?

Not always. The remote locking function and the immobiliser/transponder side of the key are related but they do not always fail together. If the Ford still starts, the issue may be worn buttons, a damaged case, battery or remote electronics. Depending on the condition of the key, repair, rehousing or replacement may be more sensible than automatically replacing everything.

Do I have to take my Ford to a main dealer for key programming?

Not for every Ford. For many models our mobile auto locksmiths can bring the required key cutting and programming equipment to the vehicle and carry out the work there. The exact answer depends on the model, year and security system, which is why we check those details first. Where mobile programming is possible, it can avoid the extra trouble of moving a car or van that cannot currently be driven.

Why do you need the Ford registration, model and year before quoting?

Ford has used different key, transponder, remote and keyless systems across different generations. Even two vehicles with the same model name may not use the same key. The registration and year help us narrow down the correct key blank, electronic system and programming method before attendance, which is particularly important on Transit and other commercial Ford models where there can be several variants.

Can you help if my Ford keys are locked inside the car or van?

Yes. Vehicle lockouts are part of our mobile auto locksmith work across Dublin. If the key is locked inside a Fiesta, Focus, Kuga, Transit or another Ford, the aim is to regain access without turning a simple lockout into unnecessary damage. If the key itself is then found to be faulty, we can check that separately.

If my Ford key was stolen, can the old key be removed from the vehicle?

On Ford systems where the programming procedure allows it, lost or stolen keys may be removed from the vehicle’s authorised key memory while the remaining or replacement keys are programmed. That is worth discussing if the key was stolen rather than simply misplaced. We would need to confirm what is possible on the exact Ford model and year before promising that procedure.

A Few Things We Have Learned From Working on Ford Keys

Ford is one of those makes we see a lot of because there are so many of them on the road around Dublin. Fiesta and Focus have always been common, but we also get plenty of Kuga, Puma, Mondeo and Ranger work, and then there are the vans — Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Connect in particular. The thing to remember is that a Ford key job is not automatically the same just because the badge on the bonnet says Ford.

The year makes a bigger difference than people expect; an older Fiesta with a normal transponder key can be a fairly different job from a later Focus or Kuga using a remote or keyless system. We normally ask for the registration, model and year before going too far with a quote because it gives us a much better idea of what key, chip and programming procedure we are dealing with.

A Ford key can turn and still not start the vehicle; this is something customers sometimes find confusing. The blade can be cut correctly and operate the ignition, but the vehicle still has to recognise the transponder inside the key. If that electronic side is not right, the immobiliser can still stop the engine from starting. That is why cutting a Ford car key and programming it are often two separate parts of the same job.

Losing the last Ford key changes the job completely; if you still have one working key, making a spare is normally the easier situation. Once every key is gone, there is nothing there for us to compare with, so we have to identify the correct key system, cut a replacement where required and then programme it to the vehicle. We do plenty of these jobs, but they are naturally more involved than simply making a second key while one still works.

Ford vans are a slightly different conversation; if somebody loses the only key to a Transit or Transit Custom, it is not just an inconvenience. Very often that van is somebody’s livelihood for the day. Tools may be inside it, jobs may be booked and the driver needs the van moving again. That is one of the main reasons a mobile auto locksmith makes sense — where the vehicle and system allow it, we can come to the van rather than having the customer organise recovery first.

We also see plenty of Ford vans where the key is not completely lost. The case may be broken, the buttons worn out, the blade loose or the remote no longer doing what it should. On an older working van, customers often do not want anything fancy; they just want a reliable key that locks, unlocks and starts the van properly so they can get on with the day.

One thing we would not do is assume every “key not detected” message means buy another key; especially on newer keyless Ford models. Sometimes the problem is the fob, sometimes it is a weak battery, and sometimes the fault is on the vehicle side. If there is a spare key available, trying that first can tell us quite a lot before anybody starts replacing parts.

Remote failure and immobiliser failure are not always the same thing; a Ford key can stop locking and unlocking from the buttons but still start the car perfectly well. We also see the opposite type of problem where the remote appears fine but the vehicle does not accept the transponder properly. That is why we try to find out exactly what the key is doing rather than simply hearing “my Ford key is broken” and assuming the whole unit needs replacing.

The physical blade still matters as much as the electronics; even on a modern remote or smart key there may still be an emergency blade inside it. The correct blank, profile and cuts have to match the vehicle. On some jobs a key code can help work out the correct cuts and depths for the blade, but that does not deal with the electronic side by itself. The transponder or remote still has to be correct for the Ford and programmed where required.

Sometimes we tell the customer the key may not actually be the problem; if the vehicle will not start, there can also be an issue with the ignition, reader, steering system, immobiliser or something else on the vehicle. A locksmith who has been doing automotive work for a long time learns fairly quickly that replacing a key just because the car will not start is not always the right answer.

Dyno Locks has been working around Dublin for decades, and Ford has always been a regular part of the automotive side of the business. From an older Fiesta that needs a simple spare to a Transit Custom with every key gone, the starting point is usually the same: tell us exactly which Ford you have, where it is and what the key is or is not doing. From there we can normally work out whether you are looking at key cutting, programming, vehicle entry, a replacement remote or something that needs a little more investigation.

Dyno Locks has been working across Dublin and Ireland for around 30 years, and over that time we have dealt with nearly every kind of car key and vehicle lock problem you can come across. We are well known in Dublin and have built up a strong reputation over the years for car keys, lockouts, immobiliser problems and key programming. A lot of main dealers will not bring specialist key cutting or programming equipment out to the car, so in some cases the vehicle may have to be brought back to the dealer, which can mean extra time and cost. With a mobile auto locksmith, we can often bring the equipment to you and cut, replace or program a new key at the vehicle where the car allows it.
