Renault Car Keys Dublin – Lost Keys, Key Cards, Spares & Programming
Renault is a little different from a lot of the other makes we work on because so many models use a key card rather than a normal ignition key. We regularly deal with Renault key and card enquiries for Megane, Clio, Captur, Scenic and other models, ranging from making a spare to situations where the only working card has been lost.
Losing the last Renault key or key card is one of the more urgent jobs. If there is no working card left, we first need the exact model, year and registration so we can establish which Renault system is fitted. Depending on the vehicle, the replacement may need to be programmed to the car before it will be recognised and allow the vehicle to start. For many supported models, our mobile auto locksmiths can deal with Renault key replacement and programming at the vehicle around Dublin.
We have dealt with Renault jobs including new key cards for Megane, Clio and Captur, spare remote-key work on Scenic, and key work on Renault Master vans. That is why we do not treat a Renault card, a normal remote key and a commercial Renault van key as if they were all the same job.
A Renault card that is still physically in your hand can cause trouble as well. It may stop being recognised, work intermittently, fail to lock or unlock properly, or leave the car showing a card/key warning. Before replacing anything, we normally want to know exactly what still works — whether the car unlocks, whether it starts, whether a spare card works, and whether the problem appeared suddenly or has been getting worse.
Renault vans are important too. If the only key to a Master or Trafic is lost first thing in the morning, it is usually more than an inconvenience. The van may have tools inside and jobs booked for the day, so getting somebody to the vehicle can be much more practical than beginning with recovery.
Renault Key & Key Card Problems We Deal With Every Day
Renault key card not being recognised; the card may still look perfectly normal but the car refuses to recognise it or allow the vehicle to start. On Megane, Captur, Scenic and other card-equipped Renaults, we first need to work out whether the problem is with the card itself or the vehicle reading it.
Lost the only Renault key or key card; this is one of the more urgent Renault jobs we get. If every card or key is gone, we first identify the exact system fitted to the car and then supply and programme a replacement where that Renault system allows it.
Renault card works sometimes and then stops; intermittent faults are common enough to be frustrating. A card may work first thing in the morning and then fail later, or only be recognised after several attempts. If you have a second card, trying it helps us work out whether the fault follows the card or stays with the vehicle.
Remote or card buttons no longer work; if the Renault still starts but the locking buttons have stopped working, the whole card or key is not necessarily dead. The battery, switches, casing or remote electronics may be the part giving trouble.
Card present but the Renault will not start; we do not immediately assume a new card will solve it. If the card is being seen but the vehicle still refuses to start, the fault may be elsewhere in the starting, immobiliser or card-reading system and needs to be checked before replacing parts.
Renault Master or Trafic key lost or damaged; commercial Renaults are a different sort of emergency because the van may be carrying tools and have jobs booked. If the only key is gone or no longer usable, getting the vehicle back working quickly matters more than just making another spare.
Renault Models We Commonly Deal With
Renault has used a mix of conventional keys, remote keys and key-card systems over the years. Key cards are especially common on models such as Megane, Scenic, Captur and later Renaults, while older Clio, Twingo and commercial models can use different remote or transponder setups.
The exact Renault key or card depends on the model, generation and security system. Send the registration, model and year when requesting a quote so we can check whether the vehicle uses a conventional key, remote, key card or hands-free card before attendance.

How a Renault Key or Key Card Job Works
Renault jobs often start with a very simple question: is the card lost, is it still there but not being recognised, or is the problem actually somewhere else in the car? We have dealt with everything from replacement Megane, Clio and Captur key cards to Scenic remote keys, Master van keys and Renault vehicle openings.
Tell Us Which Renault You Have
Give us the model, year and registration and tell us exactly what happened. It could be a lost Megane card, a Clio that needs another card, a Captur no longer recognising the key, or a Master van with no usable key left.
We Check the Card or Key System
We work out whether the Renault uses a key card, hands-free card, normal remote key or transponder key, and whether the job is replacement, programming, vehicle entry or something that needs further checking before another key is supplied.
We Come to the Renault
For many supported Renaults we can attend the vehicle, supply and programme the replacement key or card and test that the vehicle recognises it properly. If the keys are simply locked inside, the job may instead be getting the vehicle open without unnecessary damage.
Renault Car Key & Key Card FAQs
These are the Renault key questions we tend to get around Dublin — lost Megane or Clio cards, Captur cards no longer being recognised, spare Scenic keys, or somebody with a Master van and no working key left at all.
How much does a Renault replacement key or key card cost?
We need the exact Renault before giving a proper price. A spare remote for an older Clio is not the same job as replacing a Megane or Captur key card, and an all-keys-lost situation is different again. The model, year, type of card or key, and whether any working key remains all affect the job. Send us the registration, model and year and we can usually narrow it down before attendance.
I have lost the only Renault key card. Can you make another one?
On many supported Renaults, yes. If the only Megane, Clio, Captur or Scenic card has been lost, there is no working card there to use, so the job is more involved than making a spare. We first identify the correct system, then supply and programme the replacement card where that Renault allows it. For many jobs this can be dealt with at the vehicle around Dublin.
My Renault says the card is not detected. Does the card definitely need replacing?
No. We would want to know whether the card works at all, whether the problem is intermittent and whether you have another card to try. If one card works every time and the other does not, that points us towards the card. If neither one is being recognised, we would be slower to assume that both cards have failed at the same time.
My Renault card works sometimes and then suddenly stops. What does that usually mean?
Intermittent Renault card faults can be awkward because the car may recognise the card perfectly on one attempt and refuse it on the next. The useful thing is to notice exactly what is failing — locking, unlocking, starting, or all of them. If you have a spare card, comparing the two helps us work out whether the problem follows the card or stays with the vehicle.
The buttons on my Renault card have stopped working but the car still starts. Is the card finished?
Not necessarily. The remote-locking side and the part that allows the car to recognise the card are not exactly the same thing. A card can still start the Renault while the buttons, battery, casing or remote electronics are giving trouble. We would rather work out which part has failed before deciding that the whole card needs replacing.
Can you make a spare Renault Megane, Clio or Captur card?
Yes, these are the sort of Renault spare-card jobs we deal with. If you still have one working card, that is normally the best time to get another one made. Waiting until the last card is lost turns what was a straightforward spare job into an all-keys-lost problem with a car that may no longer be driveable.
Do I have to bring the Renault to a main dealer for key-card programming?
Not for every Renault. For many supported models our mobile auto locksmiths can come to the vehicle with the equipment needed to supply and programme the replacement key or card. This is particularly useful when the last card has been lost and the vehicle cannot simply be driven somewhere. The exact procedure depends on the model, year and Renault security system, so we check that first.
Why do you need the registration and year for a Renault key-card quote?
Because “Renault key card” still does not identify one single part. Renault changed card and key systems across different generations, and even the same model name can use different setups depending on the year. The registration and year help us check the likely card, remote or transponder system before somebody heads out with the wrong part.
I locked my Renault key card inside the car. Do I need a new card?
No. If the card is simply locked inside, that is a vehicle opening job rather than a replacement-card job. The immediate aim is to regain access without unnecessary damage. We only move into replacement or programming if the card itself is actually missing, damaged or no longer working properly.
Do you do Renault Master, Trafic and Kangoo keys?
Yes. Renault commercial vehicles are an important part of this work. If the only key to a Master, Trafic or Kangoo is lost, the van may be carrying tools and have a full day’s work depending on it. Tell us the model, year and what has happened and we can check what key or programming work can be done at the vehicle.
My Renault will not start even though the card is there. Is it definitely the card?
No, and this is where it is worth not guessing. If the car appears to see the card but still refuses to start, there can be another fault in the starting, immobiliser or card-reading side of the vehicle. We would rather establish what the Renault is actually doing than supply another card and hope that fixes a problem somewhere else.
My Renault key or card was stolen. Can the missing one be disabled?
On Renault systems where the programming procedure allows it, a missing or stolen key or card may be removed from the vehicle’s authorised key memory while the replacement or remaining keys are programmed. If the card was stolen rather than simply lost, tell us that at the beginning so we can check what is possible for that exact Renault.
What We Look At When a Renault Key or Key Card Stops Working
Renault is one of the makes where saying “the key is not working” does not tell us very much on its own. Depending on the model and year, we could be dealing with a conventional transponder key, a remote key, a Renault key card or a later hands-free card. A Clio, Megane, Scenic, Captur and Master can all arrive as a Renault key job, but what we actually need to check can be quite different on each one.
Renault key cards need to be treated differently from an ordinary remote key; the card may operate the locking, be recognised by the vehicle for starting, or on hands-free systems be detected without being inserted anywhere. If one of those functions fails it does not automatically mean every part of the card has failed. We normally start by asking exactly what still works.
If the Renault says the card is not detected, we do not immediately order another card; we want to know whether it happens every time, whether the locking still works and whether there is another card available. If one card works normally and the other one does not, that is useful evidence. If neither card is being recognised, we would be much slower to blame both cards at once.
We have dealt with Renault key-card work on models including Megane, Clio and Captur, as well as spare remote-key work on Scenic and key work on Renault Master vans. That spread of jobs matters because Renault did not use one card or one programming arrangement across the whole range. Even cars carrying the same model name can change significantly between generations.
Losing the last Renault card is a different job from making a spare; if you still have one working card, there is at least a functioning key there to compare against. When every Renault key or card has been lost, we first need to identify the exact vehicle system and the correct replacement before dealing with programming. That is why an all-keys-lost call is normally more involved than adding a second card while the car is still usable.
This is also why we ask for the registration and year before attending. “Megane key card” is not enough information by itself. Renault used different card designs and security arrangements across Megane generations, and the same principle applies to Scenic, Clio, Captur and other models. The vehicle details help us check what we are likely to be dealing with before bringing parts and programming equipment to the car.
A Renault refusing to start does not automatically mean the key card is bad; the card can be only one part of the starting authorisation system. If the vehicle appears to recognise the card but still will not start, or if two known cards behave the same way, we would want to look further before simply supplying another card. Replacing a working card will not fix a fault elsewhere in the vehicle.
Locking problems and starting problems should be separated; we see cards and remote keys where the buttons no longer operate the central locking but the Renault still starts. The opposite can happen as well. A worn button, damaged casing, battery or remote section is not necessarily the same fault as the vehicle failing to recognise the electronic identity of the key.
Hands-free Renault cards bring another layer to the diagnosis; on systems where the car detects the card automatically, the owner may describe the fault as the car only recognising the card in certain positions, working intermittently or needing repeated attempts. Those details are useful. The more accurately we know what the Renault is doing, the less likely we are to start by replacing something unnecessarily.
There can still be a mechanical key hidden inside the card; many electronic card systems retain an emergency blade for mechanical entry. That means the physical and electronic sides of the job can still be separate. If a blade has to be produced, the correct key profile and cuts matter, while programming is what deals with the vehicle recognising the electronic key or card.
A Renault locked with the card inside is not automatically a replacement-key job; if the key or card is physically inside the vehicle and working, the immediate problem is access. We have dealt with Renault vehicle openings as well as replacement-key work, and there is no reason to supply another card simply because the existing one is locked behind the door.
Master, Trafic and Kangoo jobs have a different urgency; because these Renaults are often working vans. Losing the only key to a Master first thing in the morning can mean tools are inaccessible and the day’s jobs cannot start. Where the particular vehicle and security system allow it, having a mobile auto locksmith attend the van can avoid making vehicle recovery the first part of the job.
After years of car key work around Dublin , the useful questions on a Renault are quite practical: which model and year is it, is it a normal key or a card, is any working card left, does the locking still work, does the vehicle recognise the card, and is the key actually lost or simply locked inside? Those answers normally tell us whether we are looking at a lost-key replacement, spare card, programming job, remote fault, vehicle opening or a problem that needs further checking.
Dyno Locks has been working across Dublin and Ireland for around 30 years, and over that time we have dealt with nearly every kind of car key and vehicle lock problem you can come across. We are well known in Dublin and have built up a strong reputation over the years for car keys, lockouts, immobiliser problems and key programming. A lot of main dealers will not bring specialist key cutting or programming equipment out to the car, so in some cases the vehicle may have to be brought back to the dealer, which can mean extra time and cost. With a mobile auto locksmith, we can often bring the equipment to you and cut, replace or program a new key at the vehicle where the car allows it.
