Toyota Replacement Keys,
Spare Keys & Programming

Toyota key jobs can vary quite a bit depending on the age of the vehicle. An older Corolla, Yaris or Avensis may use a fairly straightforward transponder key, while newer models such as the RAV4, C-HR and some hybrid Toyotas can use remote, smart or proximity key systems.

If the only Toyota key has been lost, we first check the exact model, year and key system before deciding what is needed. On many vehicles the job involves both cutting the correct blade and programming the electronic side of the key so the immobiliser recognises it. Our mobile auto locksmiths can carry out Toyota key replacement, cutting and programming at the vehicle for many models around Dublin.

If you still have one working key, getting a spare Toyota key made is usually the easier and cheaper situation. We regularly deal with Corolla, Yaris, Auris, Avensis, RAV4, C-HR, Prius and Hilux keys, along with Toyota commercial vehicles such as the Proace.

The problem is not always a totally lost key. Toyota remote buttons can wear out, key cases can crack, batteries can go flat and a smart key may stop being detected properly by the vehicle. That is why we normally ask what the key is actually doing, rather than assuming straight away that the whole unit needs replacing.

Toyota Key Problems We Deal With Every Day

◉

Toyota key not being recognised; the car may not be reading the transponder correctly, or the key may need checking or programming before the immobiliser will allow the engine to start.

⛔

Toyota smart key not detected; on newer RAV4, C-HR, Prius and other keyless-start models, a weak fob battery, damaged smart key or communication problem can leave the vehicle unable to see the key properly.

🔑

Worn Toyota remote or damaged key case; buttons can wear down, cases can crack and blades can become loose while the transponder inside still works. Sometimes the whole key is not actually the problem.

+

All Toyota keys lost; when there is no working key left, we first establish the correct Toyota key system and then cut and program a replacement where the vehicle and security system allow it.

◌

Key works sometimes and then stops; intermittent smart-key or remote problems can be awkward because the vehicle may recognise the key one minute and fail the next. In that situation, trying a spare key can help narrow down whether the fault is in the key or the car.

⎘

Spare Toyota key needed; if one working key is still available, getting another Corolla, Yaris, RAV4, Hilux or Proace key made is normally easier than dealing with the vehicle once every key is gone.

Toyota Models We Commonly Deal With

Toyota has used a wide range of key systems over the years, from older transponder keys to remote and smart-key systems on newer petrol, diesel and hybrid models. These are some of the Toyotas we regularly get key enquiries for around Dublin.

Yaris Corolla Auris Avensis RAV4 C-HR Prius Camry Land Cruiser Hilux Proace Proace City

The exact Toyota key depends on the vehicle generation and security system. Send the registration, model and year when requesting a quote so we can check the likely key, transponder or smart-fob setup before attendance.

How a Toyota Key Job Works

Toyota key systems can be very different from one generation to the next, so we normally start by checking the exact vehicle before deciding what key, cutting or programming work is needed.

01

Tell Us Which Toyota You Have

Send us the model, year, registration and what the key is doing. It could be a lost Yaris key, a spare Corolla key, a RAV4 smart key not being detected, or a Hilux with no working key left.

02

We Check the Key System

We work out whether the Toyota is using an older transponder key, remote key, smart fob or proximity system, and what cutting or programming is likely to be required before attendance.

03

Mobile Locksmith Attends

For many Toyota models we can come to the vehicle, cut the replacement key where required, program the electronic side and test that the key, remote and immobiliser are working properly before we leave.

Hybrids and newer smart-key Toyotas need the right checks first; on cars such as Prius, RAV4 and C-HR, a “key not detected” problem does not always mean the whole fob needs replacing. If there is a spare key, trying that first can help tell us whether the issue is in the key or on the vehicle side.

Toyota Car Key FAQs

These are the sort of Toyota key questions we actually get from people around Dublin — from somebody looking for a spare Yaris key to a RAV4 or Prius owner standing beside a car that suddenly says it cannot detect the key.

How much does a Toyota replacement key cost?

We would need to know which Toyota it is before giving you a sensible price. A spare key for an older Yaris or Corolla is not the same job as replacing a smart key for a newer RAV4, C-HR or Prius. The key itself, the transponder, whether it has remote buttons and whether every key has been lost all make a difference. Give us the registration, model and year and we can normally narrow it down properly before anybody heads out.

I have lost the only Toyota key. Can you make one without another key to copy?

On many Toyotas, yes. It is just a more involved job than making a spare. If there is no working key left, we first have to establish exactly which key and security system the car uses. From there the replacement may need a blade cut, a transponder programmed, or a smart key registered to the vehicle. A lot of these jobs can be dealt with at the car, depending on the model and system, which can save the hassle of organising recovery to a dealer.

My Toyota says “Key Not Detected”. Should I just order another smart key?

Not straight away. We would want to know what the car is actually doing first. On RAV4, C-HR, Prius and other keyless-start Toyotas, a weak fob battery can cause trouble, but so can a damaged key or a problem on the vehicle side. If you have a spare, try that before buying anything. If the spare works every time, that tells us quite a lot. If neither key works, it is worth checking the vehicle rather than assuming two keys have failed at once.

The buttons on my Toyota key have stopped working but the car still starts. Is the whole key gone?

No, and we see this quite often with older remote keys. The remote locking side and the immobiliser side are not exactly the same thing. If the car still starts normally, the transponder may be perfectly fine while the problem is only the battery, buttons, casing or remote electronics. We would rather look at what has actually failed than tell somebody they need a completely new key when they may not.

I still have one Toyota key. Is it worth getting a spare now?

Yes. This is one of those jobs people usually put off until the last key disappears, and then it becomes a much bigger nuisance. If you still have a working Corolla, Yaris, Avensis, RAV4 or Hilux key, making another while the car is usable is normally the easier situation. It is especially worth doing if there is only one key for a work vehicle or a car the family depends on every day.

Can you make Toyota keys at the car, or does it have to go back to Toyota?

For many Toyota models we can work at the vehicle with the cutting and programming equipment needed for the job. That is particularly useful when every key is lost and the car cannot simply be driven somewhere. There are Toyota systems where the exact procedure depends on the year and security setup, so we would always check the vehicle details first rather than promise the same process for every Toyota.

Do you do Toyota Hilux and Proace keys as well as normal cars?

Yes, we get commercial Toyota work as well. A lost Hilux or Proace key can be more urgent than an ordinary spare-key job because somebody may have tools, deliveries or work booked around that vehicle. If the van or pickup is sitting in Dublin with no usable key, tell us exactly which model, year and what happened and we can check what can be done at the vehicle.

Why do you keep asking for the Toyota registration and year?

Because “Toyota key” does not tell us enough. A Yaris that is twenty years old and a new keyless RAV4 may have almost nothing in common from a key-programming point of view. Even within the same model, Toyota changed key systems over different generations. The registration and year help us check the likely blade, transponder or smart-key system and reduce the chance of turning up with the wrong equipment or key.

My Toyota key works some days and not others. What would you check first?

The first thing we would want to know is whether you have another key and whether that one behaves the same way. Intermittent faults are awkward because the problem may be the fob, battery, transponder communication or something on the vehicle. If one key gives trouble and the spare never does, that points us in one direction. If both keys start acting up, we would be slower to blame the keys.

My Toyota key was stolen. Can the old key be stopped from starting the car?

On Toyota systems where the programming procedure allows it, an old or missing key may be removed from the vehicle’s authorised key memory when the remaining or replacement keys are programmed. That is something worth mentioning straight away if the key was stolen rather than simply dropped somewhere. We would need the exact Toyota and year before confirming what can be done on that particular car.

What We Look At When a Toyota Key Stops Working

Toyota has been using electronic keys for a long time, so the first thing we normally establish is exactly which Toyota we are dealing with. An older Yaris, Corolla or Avensis with a normal transponder key can be a very different job from a later RAV4, C-HR or Prius using a smart key and push-button start. Two Toyota keys can look similar in your hand and still require a different approach once you get into the vehicle’s security system.

If the key turns but the Toyota does not start; that normally tells us there are two sides of the job to think about. The blade may be cut correctly and operate the ignition, but the immobiliser still has to recognise the transponder inside the key. A correctly cut key does not automatically mean the electronic side is working, which is why Toyota key cutting and programming often have to be looked at separately.

Smart-key Toyotas bring a different set of problems; especially on later RAV4, C-HR, Prius and other push-button-start models. If the dashboard says “Key Not Detected”, we would not immediately assume the whole fob needs replacing. A weak battery, damaged smart key or communication problem can all give similar symptoms, and sometimes the issue is on the vehicle side rather than inside the key.

If there is a spare key available, that is often the first useful test. If one Toyota key works normally and the other one does not, that points us towards the key. If neither key is being recognised, we would be slower to blame both keys at once. Small details like that can save a lot of unnecessary replacement work.

Losing the last Toyota key is a different job from making a spare; if you still have one working key, making another one is normally the easier situation. With all keys lost, there is no working key there to compare with, so we first have to identify the correct blade, transponder or smart-key system and then work out the programming procedure for that particular Toyota.

That is why we ask for the registration, model and year before sending somebody out. It is not just something we need for the quote. Toyota changed key systems across different generations, and even two vehicles carrying the same model name can use different keys. Knowing whether we are dealing with a 2008 Yaris, a later Corolla Hybrid or a keyless RAV4 makes a real difference to what equipment and key we bring.

Sometimes the Toyota key is not actually the fault; if the vehicle has a key but still will not start, there can also be an issue with the immobiliser reader, ignition, steering system or another part of the vehicle. We would rather work out what the Toyota is actually doing than fit another key and hope that solves it.

A damaged Toyota remote does not always mean a completely dead key; on older remote keys in particular, the buttons or casing may be worn while the transponder still starts the car perfectly well. Sometimes it is the outer shell, battery or remote section that has failed. That is a different problem from the vehicle refusing to recognise the transponder, and it is worth separating the two before deciding what needs replacing.

The physical blade still has to be right; even where the vehicle uses a remote or smart key, there may be a mechanical blade involved for the door or emergency entry. On some jobs a key code can help determine the correct cuts and depths for that blade. The correct key blank and blade still have to match the Toyota, and that mechanical side is separate from programming the transponder or smart key.

Hilux and Proace jobs tend to be more urgent; because very often the vehicle is being used for work. If the only Hilux or Proace key disappears, the problem is not just that the owner cannot drive home later. There may be tools in the vehicle, customers waiting or a day’s work depending on it. Where the Toyota and security system allow it, having a mobile auto locksmith attend the vehicle can avoid having to arrange recovery first.

After years of dealing with car keys around Dublin, the useful information is usually quite simple: which Toyota is it, what year is it, do you have any working key left, and what exactly happens when you try to use it? From there we can usually narrow the job down to key cutting, programming, vehicle entry , a remote problem or something on the vehicle that needs further checking.

Dyno Locks has been working across Dublin and Ireland for around 30 years, and over that time we have dealt with nearly every kind of car key and vehicle lock problem you can come across. We are well known in Dublin and have built up a strong reputation over the years for car keys, lockouts, immobiliser problems and key programming. A lot of main dealers will not bring specialist key cutting or programming equipment out to the car, so in some cases the vehicle may have to be brought back to the dealer, which can mean extra time and cost. With a mobile auto locksmith, we can often bring the equipment to you and cut, replace or program a new key at the vehicle where the car allows it.
