Car Keys Dublin
Lost your Volkswagen key or need a spare? Dyno Locks provides mobile Volkswagen key replacement, key programming and vehicle lockout assistance across Dublin.
Volkswagen Replacement Keys,
Spare Keys & Programming
Lost Volkswagen keys are one of the more common car key jobs we deal with around Dublin. If the only key is gone, we can check the Volkswagen model, year and key system and work out what is needed to make another one.
On many VW models it is not simply a matter of cutting another blade. The transponder inside the key also has to be recognised by the car before it will start. Our mobile auto locksmiths can carry out Volkswagen key replacement, cutting and programming at the vehicle for many models, which can avoid having the car brought back to a dealer or workshop.
If you still have one working key, making a spare Volkswagen key is normally an easier job and can save a lot of hassle later. We regularly work with Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, Touran, Caddy and Transporter keys as well as other Volkswagen models.
Volkswagen keys can use different systems depending on the model and year, including flip keys, remote fobs, transponder keys and newer smart or proximity keys. That is why we normally ask for the model, year and registration before giving a quote.
Volkswagen Key Problems We Deal With Every Day
Volkswagen key not recognised; the transponder may not be communicating properly with the immobiliser, or the key may need to be programmed again before the vehicle will start.
Key not starting the car; the blade may turn in the ignition but the engine still will not start if the immobiliser does not recognise the chip inside the key.
Broken flip key or remote fob; worn buttons, cracked cases, damaged blades or failed electronics can stop an otherwise working Volkswagen key from being useful.
All Volkswagen keys lost; when there is no working key left, we first identify the correct key system and then cut and program a new replacement where the vehicle supports it.
Steering lock or ignition problems; on some Volkswagen models the problem may be with the ignition barrel, steering lock or another part of the vehicle rather than the key itself.
Spare Volkswagen key needed; if you still have one working key, getting another one cut and programmed can save a much more awkward all-keys-lost job later on.
Volkswagen Models We Commonly Deal With
Volkswagen key systems vary quite a bit between models and years, but these are some of the VW vehicles we regularly get enquiries and car key jobs for around Dublin.
The exact key type depends on the vehicle, year and security system. Send the registration, model and year when requesting a quote so we can check the correct key.

Volkswagen Car Key FAQs
A few of the Volkswagen key questions we get most often from drivers around Dublin.
How much does a replacement Volkswagen key cost in Dublin?
There is no single Volkswagen key price because the cost depends on the model, year and the type of key the car uses. A basic spare key for an older Polo is a different job from replacing a newer Golf, Tiguan or keyless-start Volkswagen key. We normally ask for the registration, model and year first so we can check the key system and give a proper price before the work starts.
I have lost the only key to my Volkswagen. Can you still make another one?
In many cases, yes. An all-keys-lost Volkswagen job is more involved than making a spare because there is no working key to copy or use during programming. The locksmith has to identify the correct key, cut the blade where required and program the transponder or remote to the vehicle. Whether it can all be done at the car depends on the particular Volkswagen and security system.
My Volkswagen key turns but the engine will not start. Is the key still the problem?
It can be. The metal blade and the electronic part of the key do two different jobs. A key can physically turn the ignition while the immobiliser still refuses to allow the engine to start because it is not recognising the transponder chip. Before replacing anything, it is important to work out whether the fault is actually in the key, the immobiliser system, ignition or another part of the vehicle.
My VW remote buttons have stopped working but the car still starts. Do I need a completely new key?
Not always. If the transponder is still being recognised and the car starts normally, the problem may only be with the remote section, worn buttons, battery, damaged casing or internal electronics. Sometimes the existing key can be repaired or rehoused; other times a replacement remote key is the better option. We would normally check the condition of the existing key before deciding.
Can you make a spare Volkswagen key without taking the car to a main dealer?
For many Volkswagen models, yes. Our mobile auto locksmiths can attend the vehicle with key cutting and programming equipment and make a spare key on site where the system allows it. This is particularly useful if you want another key for a Golf, Polo, Passat, Tiguan, Caddy or Transporter without arranging to leave the vehicle elsewhere.
Why do you ask for my Volkswagen registration and year before giving a quote?
Volkswagen used different key and immobiliser systems across different generations, and even two cars with the same model name can require different keys. The registration and year help us narrow down the vehicle version, blade, transponder and remote system before we attend. It also reduces the chance of arriving with the wrong key type.
My Volkswagen says “Key Not Detected”. Does that automatically mean the key needs replacing?
No. On proximity and keyless-start Volkswagens, a “Key Not Detected” warning can have several causes, including a weak fob battery, damaged key, communication problem or an issue on the vehicle side. If a spare key works normally, that gives us a useful clue. If neither key works, it may need further checking before simply ordering another fob.
Can you delete a lost Volkswagen key so somebody cannot use it later?
On vehicles where the security system and programming procedure allow it, lost keys may be removed from the vehicle’s authorised key memory when the remaining or replacement keys are programmed. This is particularly worth discussing if the key was stolen rather than simply misplaced. We would need to check the exact Volkswagen system before confirming what can be done.
A Little More About How Modern Car Keys Actually Work
Car keys are not as simple as they used to be. On an older car, replacing a key could mostly mean cutting another blade to match the lock. With newer vehicles, the metal part is often only one part of the job. There may also be a transponder chip, remote locking system or smart key that has to communicate with the car before it will start. This is why a replacement key for one vehicle can be a fairly straightforward job while another needs both cutting and electronic programming.
A key can turn but still not start the car; this normally comes down to the difference between the mechanical key and the electronic side of the system. The blade may be cut correctly and still open the door or turn in the ignition, but if the transponder is not being recognised by the immobiliser, the engine may stay disabled. On modern cars, key cutting and transponder programming are often two separate parts of the same job.
Losing the last working key makes things more involved; making a spare while you still have one working key is usually easier than dealing with an all-keys-lost situation. When there is no key to copy, the locksmith first has to establish the correct blade and key system for the vehicle, then program the new key where required. This is one reason we ask for the make, model and year before giving advice.
Even within the same manufacturer, key systems change between models and generations. An older Toyota with a normal transponder key can be a very different job from a later Toyota using proximity or push-button start. The same applies to Volkswagen , BMW and Mercedes-Benz . The badge itself does not tell you what sort of key job is involved.
Transponder, remote and smart key do not mean exactly the same thing; a transponder is the chip the vehicle’s immobiliser reads. A remote usually means the buttons used for locking and unlocking the car. A smart or proximity key can communicate with the vehicle without being put into an ignition barrel. Some keys combine all of these functions in one unit, while others use a separate key and remote.
This is also why a key that looks broken does not always need to be replaced completely. Sometimes the blade is fine and the problem is in the remote casing, buttons or electronics. In other cases the remote still works but the transponder is not being recognised. On vehicles such as Renault , key cards are another common format and the way they are dealt with is different again.
Sometimes the key is not actually the fault; if a key is present but the car will not start, the problem can also be with the ignition, steering lock, immobiliser reader or another part of the vehicle. It is worth checking what the car is actually doing before assuming another key will automatically solve the problem.
Modern key cutting also needs the correct equipment; many vehicles use high-security or sidewinder-style blades rather than the simpler edge-cut keys used on older cars. The correct key blank and blade profile have to match the vehicle, and the electronic side still has to be dealt with separately when the car uses a transponder or smart key.
A key can therefore be cut perfectly and still leave the car immobilised if the chip is wrong or has not been programmed. The opposite is also true: there is little point correctly programming a transponder if the physical blade does not operate the lock or ignition. Both parts need to work together. A key code is also used on some jobs and helps the locksmith work out the correct cuts and depths needed for the key blade to operate the lock properly. Depending on the car, that information may then be used together with the correct key blank, transponder chip and programming process to get the replacement key working properly with the vehicle.
Vehicle details matter more than people usually expect; when we ask for the make, model and year it is not just for the quote. Those details help narrow down which key system the vehicle is likely to use. A Nissan remote key, a Renault card and a Mercedes electronic key can require completely different equipment and procedures even though the customer simply sees the problem as “I need another car key”.
If the problem is a lost key, damaged fob, keys locked in the vehicle or a key that suddenly stops starting the car, the easiest starting point is to explain exactly what happened. From there an auto locksmith can work out whether the job is mainly key cutting, programming, vehicle entry, key repair or an ignition or immobiliser problem.
Dyno Locks has been working across Dublin and Ireland for around 30 years, and over that time we have dealt with nearly every kind of car key and vehicle lock problem you can come across. We are well known in Dublin and have built up a strong reputation over the years for car keys, lockouts, immobiliser problems and key programming. A lot of main dealers will not bring specialist key cutting or programming equipment out to the car, so in some cases the vehicle may have to be brought back to the dealer, which can mean extra time and cost. With a mobile auto locksmith, we can often bring the equipment to you and cut, replace or program a new key at the vehicle where the car allows it.
