WHAT IS A LOCKSMITH

 

A locksmith is a person who provides a security service installing, opening, maintaining, l

repairing or servicing security equipment that

(a)  consists of mechanical, electronic or other locking devices designed, constructed or adapted to prevent unauthorised access to or within premises where such equipment is situated

Or

(b)  consists of mechanical, electronic or other locking devices designed, constructed or adapted to prevent unauthorised access to motor vehicles and includes a person who in connection with the provision of the services referred to in paragraph (a) or (b),

originates, duplicates or provides by copy or code restricted keys, safe keys or motor vehicle transponder keys, gives advice relating to the installation of such equipment or advice relating to the protection of such devices from damage or interference.

In Ireland since the 1st February 2017, contractors providing Locksmith services without a licence will be breaking the law.

 

Any person employing the services of an unlicensed locksmith after the 1st February 2017 will be breaking the law and may face up to €3,000 fine and/or five year term of imprisonment. A person in this context includes individuals and business.

WHAT IS AN AUTO LOCKSMITH

An auto locksmith is a person who deals with all types of keys for vehicles,

provides replacement car keys, replacement car locks, opening of vehicles, ECU repairs (Engine control units),  ICR repairs (Instrument cluster repairs), remote type keys, transponder type keys, key cards and general car keys.

 

HOW MUCH WOULD LOCKSMITH PRICES BE

Locksmith prices can vary for different counties, some larger towns or cities may have higher course but generally there will be a labour charge and a charge for for materials If supplied.

it is always best to confirm cost prior to using the locksmith service.

locksmith licensing came in force in February 2016 therefore it is important that you asked the locksmith if he has a licence or not prior to using the services.

 

HOW MUCH IS A MULTIPOINT LOCK

Multipoint locks are fitted in most UPVC doors and some composite and wooden doors,  the cost of replacement can vary depending on the brand but most range from €125 euros up to €245

 

HOW MUCH IS A LOCK CHANGE

Lock changes can vary depending on the type of lock or brand required, a standard type lock can range from €20 to €90

 

HOW TO FIND A LOCKSMITH

To find a locksmith most would search on a PC or mobile device true Google Yahoo or Bing, you could also search through directories like your local or Golden Pages. Some prefer to get recommended by a neighbour, friend or relative.

 

HOW TO BECOME A LOCKSMITH

To provide a locksmith service you will be required by law to have a PSA licence in Ireland. In order to become a locksmith you should seek some training from a recognised body, there are training courses available of which can be sought true ALOI (Associate Locksmiths Of Ireland), IOL (Irish Locksmith Association) or the MLA

(Master Locksmith Association) in the UK.

In order to train as a locksmith you must first seek training through one of the recognised bodies, you should first make contact with the Irish locksmith Association, Associated Locksmiths Of Ireland or the master locksmith association in the UK all of which can guide you in the right direction.
